He loves the world enough to punish wrongdoing, and he loves people enough to take the punishment himself. It seems to me as if this is a truly loving God. He does it by himself taking our place in his death taking our punishment and himself experiencing hell so that we don’t have to. He doesn’t do this by leaving things unpunished, and so forgetting about justice. But he does say it to warn us - and to help us see how amazing it is that he offers us a way out.īecause this is the amazing news - that even though we all deserve punishment, even though we deserve to go to hell, Jesus - God himself - has provided a way out for us. But just because we don’t like something, doesn’t mean that it’s not true.Īnd it’s not something that Jesus says flippantly or lightly, without caring. Now as I say this, I know it’s not an easy thing to hear. None of us are perfect - so none of us should be in God’s perfect kingdom. And I haven’t treated God as I should - as my Maker and my Creator, and therefore the ruler in charge of my life.Īnd so I deserve punishment of my wrongdoing too. I’ve hurt people, I’ve ignored their needs, actually I’ve upset even some of the people I love the most. If I’m honest, I know I haven’t treated people as I should. None of us have treated God, or treated each other, in the perfect way we were intended to. ![]() Now I guess not many of us have a problem with the idea of famously bad people facing punishment - but this actually leaves us with a problem too, because none of us are perfect. It’s loving of a just God to hate and punish wrongdoing, so that only perfect things are in his perfect kingdom. We all have a kind of a sense of justice - so it’s good news that people who mistreat others are not allowed into God’s perfect kingdom, but are shut out-that is, they’re sent to hell. So God is loving - and yet he doesn’t love everything.Īnd because this loving God hates bad things, he does something about it. It wouldn’t be very loving of God to look at something like child abuse and say: “Well, I’m not really that bothered.” Actually, if he is loving, then he will hate these things. So he doesn’t love murder, or abuse, or selfishness, or pride. Just because God is loving, does not mean that he loves everything-there are some things that God doesn’t love, that in fact he hates. Well the Bible says that God is loving, and it also says that he will send some people to hell - so could it be that both things are true at the same time? I’d like to briefly give a couple of suggestions as to why this is the case. And so why can’t God just forgive everyone, and let anyone into heaven? Why does he insist in a seemingly cruel way that some people must go to hell? ![]() The Bible says that hell is a place without any of the good things that God gives us and which we enjoy today, such as friendship, love, joy - it’s an awful place. If God is so loving-and the Bible says that he is-then surely he wouldn’t send anyone to hell, would he? That’s a great question, a potentially explosive question.

This effect is particularly problematic during hiring interviews, as it’s been estimated that wrong hires can cost a business one to seven times the person’s first annual salary. The long-term implication of the first impression bias is referred to as the halo effect, which plays out when a positive first impression about one trait, such as beauty, leads people to infer the existence of other traits, such as intelligence. The Pygmalion effect occurs when someone else’s high expectations of us becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, pushing us to do better. Notably, the first impression bias is not an isolated effect, but rather leads to the development of many subsequent cognitive biases such as the halo effect and the confirmation bias. Further, this finding can carry over to price targets and recommendations. Specifically, Hirschleifer and colleagues found that if a firm performs well in the year before an analyst follows that firm, the analyst is optimistic in subsequent forecasts and vice versa. They found that finance professionals are prone to the first impression bias in their forecasts of the earnings for the firms that they cover. Hirshleifer and colleagues (2020) examined whether an analyst’s first impressions of a firm would induce bias in analyst forecasting behaviour. 7 This has many implications, but an interesting example of this exists among finance professionals. The first impression bias can influence decision makers to place more weight on information first received, than information received later. 4 Recall that the first impression bias can influence recruiters appraisal of a candidate therefore, it seems that if national culture is shared among candidate and recruiter, the recruiter will not make assumptions about the candidates capabilities or character as they would with someone not of the same national culture. For example, Fang and colleagues (2020) found that national culture – the shared attitude or beliefs that separate members of one group from another – reduces first impression bias. More recent work has focused on first impressions’ role in different disciplines and across cultures. 5 The confirmation bias was later described by Peter Wason in 1960, using the Wason’s Rule Discovery Test. The halo effect was discovered by Edward Thorndike, an American psychologist and early behaviorist, in 1920, but was not given its term until 1938 by S. Later work on first impression bias focused on how other cognitive biases, such as the halo effect and confirmation bias, perpetuate the first impression bias. 12 However, this approach fell out of favor in the 19th century due to its similarity to phrenology, a pseudoscience that correlates measurements of bumps on the skull with personality characteristics. This information could then be used to determine if a person suited a particular occupation. In the 1700s, Johann Kaspar Lavater, a Swiss pastor, published a series of essays on how face features such as the shape of a nose and the closeness of eyebrows were important in determining a person’s intelligence, kindness, and perseverance. Early research on the psychology of first impressions was focused almost exclusively on physical traits and personality, as attributes of the face were considered to be telling of a person’s character traits. ![]() Some countries with close ties to Russia were initially neutral in their reaction to the invasion, with China neither criticizing nor endorsing Putin’s actions. ![]() His main ally is Alexandr Lukashenko, president of Belarus, where tens of thousands of Russian troops have been stationed since before the Ukraine invasion began. He befriends the brooding, hard-living Doc Holliday and begins to fall for Clementine Carter, Doc's former love from back East who has been scouring the West to bring him back home. In his calm, quiet way, Earp brings a semblance of justice and order to Tombstone despite several tense run-ins with the vicious Clanton gang. Determined to stay in Tombstone until he finds his brother's killers, Wyatt accepts the job as marshal and deputizes Morgan and Virgil. When they return to camp, they discover James is dead and the cattle have been rustled. Tombstone, Arizona, 1882: Wyatt Earp and his brothers Morgan and Virgil arrive at the lawless boom town for a night of relaxation, leaving their youngest brother James behind to tend their cattle herd. Clementine says goodbye to Wyatt and, explaining that she intends to remain in Tombstone, asks him to stop by if he is ever in the area again. Before he can get far, however, Morgan kills him. Rather than kill Clanton, Wyatt turns him loose to wander and suffer from the deaths of his sons. The gunfight begins at sunup and by the end, all the Clantons, except the father, are dead, as is Doc. The Clantons ride into town and, after dropping Virgil's body at Wyatt's feet, announce that they will be waiting for the Earps at the O.K. Meanwhile, Virgil chases Billy to the Clanton ranch and is killed by Clanton after Billy dies of gunshot wounds. While Virgil chases Billy, Doc reluctantly agrees to operate on Chihuahua with the help of Clementine, who is a nurse. Billy, who is waiting outside Chihuahua's room, then shoots her. At first Chihuahua sticks to her story, but when she learns that the necklace was stolen by the man who killed Wyatt's brother, she admits that it was a gift from Billy Clanton. After Doc returns with Wyatt, however, he demands to know who really gave her the necklace. Chihuahua claims that Doc gave it to her, and Wyatt takes off in pursuit of him. There Wyatt notices that she is wearing a necklace that James had bought to give to his girl friend. This angers Chihuahua, who had hoped Doc would take her to Mexico and marry her, and she storms into Clementine's hotel room to help her pack. Furious that she is still in town, Doc leaves the next day on the afternoon stage to Tucson. Afterward, at a dinner at the hotel, Doc comes upon Wyatt and Clementine. Together they attend a dance to raise money to build a church in Tombstone. While waiting to pay her hotel bill, Clementine meets Wyatt, who is somewhat enamored of her. One morning, the stagecoach delivers a well-dressed woman named Clementine Carter, Doc's former fiancée, to town. Wyatt discovers that Doc is well-educated and when his recitation of Hamlet's soliloquy is interrupted by a fierce fit of coughing, also deduces that he has consumption.
